“Doc, I keep having the same bad dream over and over. What does it all mean? Well son, I think deep inside, you really wanted an excuse to buy a new set of 2306 Ummagawd motors.”

“The first part is a timelapse of the storm clouds and jet contrails and the first lightning bolt strikes right on the beat of the music (I didn’t edit it that way, it just happened). Music from The Devil Bat and the song “Green Bean Snow Day.'”

“I love this little micro heli from Propel. Just a matter of time before I burn out the motor but it does ok. No acro but still fun to fly. If I remove the canopy I think it will carry a AIO FPV camera … just to see what it would be like.”

“I pretty much always save a battery for a sunset flight each day. I love watching upside down sunsets and inverting the colors makes it extra cool. Music from Pat Metheny’s ‘Secret Story.'”

“As I get better at racing the track, I’m finding places where I can add a little flare to the mix. Music from my friends at The Devil Bat and the song ‘Appalachian.'”

“After the latest crash, I replaced the bottom plate with a thicker stock to stiffen it up and I down geared the props from 6045’s to 6040’s to keep the under sized motors from overheating. Turns out the extra weight and props requires a lot more throttle to pull out of a dive. I heard the quad pass right over my head but when I remembered to check out the security cam video and just about crapped my pants when I saw how close it really was. Just shy of 2 pounds at 50+ mph could really make an impression.”

“I think this is the third time I’ve had some sort of fail ending in a 200 foot fall. The frame takes a lot of abuse but it’s the motors take most of the damage. I’ve bent the bells back into shape several times and I was amazed it actually worked…for a while anyways. I was skimping on the JB Weld trying to keep the weight down for the first couple of repairs but this time just “grouted” all those magnets in place. With the big 6 inch props, the motor bell balance doesn’t seem to be an issue at all. Anyway, music from The Rudy Schwartz Project for the repair clips.”

“I found a line through the trees but I have to keep trimming back the new growth. I have another track on the other side of the property but I need to build a deck high enough to get a signal to both sides but even then…keeping up on the grooming gets to be a full time job. The ever changing skraggle makes it a challenge.”

“I’ve been hacking my way through the cactus to carve out a new section to the track. This one is a major skraggle tunnel and it took a bit to work out the last exit turn. I got it eventually. It’s a tight rip and flying so close to everything makes it look even faster. The 20 gusting to 30mph winds make it even harder but still doable. Still need to build the deck onto the back of the shop so my signal will reach all the different track sections but it’s getting there. Music from Ed Hall from their album “Albert” and the song ‘Bowling.'”

“From earlier in the year, working with the new 6inch quad with the neutral gravity arms. Handheld cam: Tim Stone. Music from Tiana Hux and her collection of songs called ‘Story.'”

“I found a new field to fly and the music of Kathy McCarty makes it even better. Check out all the songs on ‘Another Day In The Sun.'”

“Spent the morning clearing a few more openings in the west side tunnel of skraggle on the Skraggle Town Field Of Pain. By sunset, the deer had already moved in and inspired an unplanned detour. The gap I could see in the goggles didn’t include the smaller lowest branch. Somehow I made it, I think because this 6 inch beast just eats through everything it hits.”

“Big thanks to Joe for letting my fly at the pit again. It was pretty windy but I really wanted to see if my Vtx would get a clear signal all the way to the other side. The canyon on the far end was getting a bit of static but other than that is was fine. I boosted the color saturation just for fun and it really brings out the variations in materials that flow through here. All made extra cool when adding the Tommy James, Robert L. King song “Draggin’ the Line” done by Scott Marcus from his epic collection of songs ‘Rock Star.'”

“Been playing with yaw spins on my regular moves. Still a bit shaky from some belly funk earlier in the week but getting there. The 6 inch aluminum quad seems to have a lot more hang time than my 5 inch Alien. Much quieter too. Now, if I can only find a reliable Vtx so I don’t end up a block away with camera parts scattered across the pavement. The frame was fine with just a few bent arms that bent right back. Beautiful music from George Winston. For more on my aluminum frames(Full list of products coming soon) go to beaterquad.etsy.com”

“Finally got the 2 3s builds started. Still need to finalize the camera mount design and the decide on the RC gear but they power up and hover with my extra XM+ receiver. I’ve been flying one of them and it’s feeling ok on default PIDs but I need to figure out how to tap into the camera/Vtx link on these little 3 in 1 FPV cams so I can hook up the OSD for the full pid tuning via goggles.”

“The first of 2 pre-production prototypes for the 3s trainers set up with the neutral center of gravity arms. I love the sound of fresh motors in the morning.”

“Zoning out on the Pat Metheny music. My flying skills with the 5 inch Alien are still too twitchy and inaccurate. I was getting there with the 6 inch neutral cg frame but I fried a motor … trying to figure out why the ESC GUI wouldn’t display the firmware “read” after it kept disarming mid loop. Anyway … I like the look of the grass clippings falling from the lens after a bit of ‘lawn care.'”

“I heard a screeching sound and thought it was a chipped prop or something like that. It only did it at full throttle so I figured I would do a punch out right next to me so I could hear it close up. Just as I started to roll, it locked into an uncontrollable inverted yaw spin(been meaning to try one of those but not by accident). It dropped about 10 feet away from me. Magnets came loose and jammed the motor midflight.”

“The new Mr Steele motors are kicking out the power. I’m getting closer to figuring out the best PID tuning but still need a better understanding on all the filter stuff and what works best to fix which issue. Finally getting up to racing speeds…I think…don’t really know since I’ve never flown with anyone else but the figure 8s near the end do get my blood pumping. The energetic music from Jeff Beck’s “You Had It Coming” helps a lot.”

“Out for a test flight and came across this lovely creature mid power loop. I’m thinking sparrow hawk but I really don’t know.”

“Got the 6 inch rat build up and flying. Ruff PIDs, bent motors, chipped props, but it still flies good enough for some fun. Aluminum frame with arms shaped to provide neutral center of gravity. For details on the durability of aluminum frames, check out the crash test 3s video. Music from the most awesome band to come out of Austin Texas from that time period. Ed Hall, recorded in my warehouse and my name is on the cover so the copyrights police can bite me.”

“This was a first power up test after swapping out some bent motors and updating the flight controller firmware. I eventually found I had flashed the wrong version of the firmware though experts told me that wouldn’t cause this effect. After doing a bit more research I tried reloading the firmware and it seems to have fixed it. Glad I didn’t use the old test method of setting it in the street and standing back a safe distance. This thing could go apeshit crazy and slice up anything in it’s path if not tied down.”

“After 2 years of building and testing quads only to have some of them flip or spin out of control on first power up, often damaging them and requiring repairs and starting all over, I built this test stand method. It allows testing with props on for full load testing which can reveal problems not seen in tests with the props off. It also helps check for overheating motors and speed controllers. I want to add a containment dome for better safety but as it is, it’s still safer than just trusting it won’t fly back and hit me when testing outdoors. I also want to add some load sensors to test the thrust/power curve produced by each motor.”

“Swapped out the motors so of course the flight controller had to go next. Got that swapped out so the goggles started cutting out. Got a new receiver for the goggles so the video transmitter cut out. As the great thinker Roseanne Roseannadanna always said, ‘It’s a always a sumthin.'”

“Experimenting with new ways to keep my hands warm while flying. I call it the RC Cozy. It works great but needs to be just a tad bigger so I don’t feel the inner lining of fur on the backs of my hands. It’s just a little distracting. Also on this flight, a chance encounter with a flock of geese I only heard as I took off and didn’t see them in the goggles at all. And finally…first mild crash with the brand new Mr Steele motors and the c-clip failed. Can’t figure out why since these are the most solid clips of any I’ve seen. As fate would have it, he came out with the V2 motors just after I got mine.”
